Recently, a good friend from Apple, Jason Bruder, turned me onto a really great Safari plugin called ClickToFlash.

This plugin works very similar to AdBlock Plus, but is focused on blocking Flash. See below for some screenshots.

You can specify to get the H.264 versions (and even the HD versions automatically) of videos from sites like YouTube, and block the really, REALLY annoying Flash ads that slow down your browsing, and can even crash your browser.

* Yes, applications on Mac crash, as does the OS itself.

Here are some screenshots from the app:

And, yes, this is an open source plugin. If you ever wondered how to make a plugin like this… just take a peek at the source.

There is something similar for the Firefox users out there: Flashblock. It creates a frame where the Flash would be playing which you can then click to activate the Flash. Additionally, you can right click and select to always allow Flash on that particular domain.

It sounds like this works very similarly, but I don’t have Safari to try it out.

Hrmm that was weird, my comment got eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it’s nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere. This was the first place that told me the answer. Thanks
